“Happy Mommy’s Day” a little early

May 7th, 2010 by Donnie

As Connor and I were out and about the other night, we stopped by Target. I love just talking to Connor and telling him things. So I start telling him, we need to buy Mommy something for Mother’s Day. I keep repeating that and even asking him if thinks Mommy will like why we were getting her for Mother’s Day.

Next we stopped by the cards to pick out a Mother’s Day card. Again, I am talking to him and telling him what we are doing. So by this time, I think he figured out that Mother’s Day had something to do with Mommy. (I didn’t realize he was picking up on this.)

Next I start trying to get him to say, “Happy Mother’s Day” in anticipation of springing this upon Mommy on Sunday morning. So, the tricky part is I have to teach him how to say it but not have him spoil the surprise. Well, he couldn’t quite say the “Mother’s” portion of the wish, so he quickly figured out (without me telling him) that “Happy Mommy’s Day” was close enough.

So as I was pushing the cart around Target I would say, “Can you say Happy Mother’s Day?”
Connor would respond, “Happy Mommy’s Day.”
We kept this up several times and even kept saying it as we walked out to the car.

I was thrilled that he was able to pick this up and say it so clearly.

This all happened on Tuesday night…flash forward to lunch time on Friday.

I get this text message from Victoria:
“Connor said something to me today. He said, ‘Happy Mommy’s Day!’ I am so surprised!”

So, it was a little bit early but I think Mommy was quite surprised and pleased that her son was able to tell her that.

So Victoria, Happy (early) Mommy’s Day and here’s to you having many more with both of your boys!!!!

Love,
Daddy/Donnie
