Today, Victoria and I went to her Doctor’s office for our first official prenatal visit. This was just for the standard consultation and to receive materials related to help educate us on the pregnancy and tests that we may choose to have performed.
We also talked about what our insurance covers. The woman that deals with the insurance in the office was just amazed at what the City’s insurance plan covers. We will have one $20 copay and then only have to cover 10% of lab work, etc… She said that we are very lucky to have that good of a plan. I guess working for the City does have some benefits 😉
Initially, they didn’t recognize Victoria was an “older” woman (or maybe I should say “mature”). It wasn’t until we were almost done that they realized it and then gave us an extra magazine for women that are over 35. They said she did not look anywhere near her age. That made Victoria feel good.
They took her blood pressure (which was “excellent”) as well as 4 vials of blood for standard testing. We go back in two weeks for our first ultrasound and are looking forward to hearing the heartbeat for the first time.
Victoria had already been taking prenatal vitamins at the suggestion of Jaime prior to this visit — so we had a jump on it. The nurse gave Victoria 4 different types of prenatal vitamins and said to try each one. When she finds one she likes, then we can get a prescription for that kind. Evidently they are enhanced with DHA (omega 3) from a non-fish source. It was nice to hear this because I had started Victoria on flaxseed oil (omega3) sometime ago, so she has had this in her system for several years now. Evidently this helps with the development of the brain and eyes.

Victoria says she is over 100 lbs today because of all the pancakes she ate this morning. I’ve told her that it is mostly water gain and the reason she is seeing it so soon is because she was very fit to begin with.

Well, the ginger ale and crackers have started. Except it is for me and not Victoria. I came down with a stomach bug Saturday night and have been in bed since then. Victoria took me to the doctor today and they gave me some medicine to help with the cramping.
Hopefully I’ll start to feel better and Victoria won’t catch what I have.

We have it all set up. We are going to Richmond today to have lunch with Danny, Kristen, and my Mom. We have also set up dinner with Victoria’s Mom and Dad at 7pm tonight. No one suspects a thing.
Richmond announcement:
We stopped at the rest area on the way up because Victoria had to use the bathroom. I was hoping my mom was not going to suspect anything and I was also concerned that Victoria might have been sick. She was fine, she just had to urinate (something that occurs frequently when you are pregnant). We made it to Richmond and Victoria had to use the bathroom again. Danny asked me if Victoria was feeling ok. I said yes and he asked me again. I sensed he knew something was up but I didn’t let on. Danny showed us the house and we had some cake. Victoria had a big piece — she is eating for two now. 😉
Everyone was sitting in my brother’s living room and that is when I gave my mom the gift bag that contained the blue and pink booties. She opened the gift and was not sure what it was. She was a little confused and I rubbed her on her back and said, “Mom, you’re gonna be a grandma.” She got all excited and hugged Victoria and I. Danny and Kristin were excited and congratulated us. We called Bucky, Melissa, and Antoinette.
Announcing to Victoria’s parents:
We got home around 5:30pm and had a little while before Victoria’s Mom and Dad came over. We sat them down outside and did some chatting. Victoria went and got the gift bag and gave it to her Mom to open. Louise began to open it. She was a little perplexed. I think Gene assumed it was for Chad and Catherine, but they had just found out that they will be having a girl (so the blue booty wouldn’t work for them). Louise recognized this and looked at me with wide eyes. I kind of gave her a nod and then she started hugging and crying Victoria. Victoria was crying. Gene and I also shed a tear or two. It was pretty amazing. For the next hour or so, we called family and chatted about the pregnancy.

Victoria has some water gain and some of her pants and skirts don’t fit. She is not thrilled about this. 🙂

Victoria and I went to see her doctor for her normal yearly checkup. I wasn’t sure what to expect but wanted to be there so we could ask questions together. They took a urine sample and verified she is pregnant (4 for 4). COOL! Now I can finally believe it! (Maybe I’ll be a believer when I see the ultrasound.)
We are scheduled for a consultation in 2 weeks and an our first ultrasound in about 6 weeks.
The doctor estimated that Victoria is 4.5 weeks pregnant and is due on January 30, 2008.

Victoria and I spent about 30 mins in Babies R Us tonight. We were looking for something on Jaime’s baby registry.
Victoria also suggested that we buy some shoes to give presents to our parents to announce our news. We purchased a pair of boy booties and a girl booties. We plan on giving a blue and pink booty to my Mom and to her parents.
We looked at furniture and other things to see what looked nice.
We stopped by Barnes & Noble on the way home and picked up “What to Expect When You’re Expecting”. Jaime suggested this book and from what I read online, this is an excellent book. We began reading it tonight.

We had one final test and figured what the heck… Well, we are perfect now (3 for 3) on the tests. Victoria said, “See, I told you so.”
Jaime (the girl I work with and who is 20+ weeks pregnant) suggested we take a picture of the positive pregnancy test, so the photographer did so.
